If you’re using Windows/Linux/Mac and are failing to install ionic framework & cordova as explained by ionic’s documentation. Then follow these steps and you should be able to install it without much problems:

  1. Download latest version of NodeJS & install it. (you may have an old version of NodeJS, make sure to use installer – this takes care of environment variable/PATH issues)
  2. Update NPM. npm update -g
  3. Uninstall Failed Install of Cordova. npm uninstall -g cordova
  4. Uninstall Failed Install of ionic. npm uninstall -g ionic
  5. Install Cordova & Ionic again. npm install -g ionic cordova

This should fix potentially any install problems when it comes to install ionic & cordova. Let me know in comments if you’re struggling with installing ionic framework on windows or any other platform.
